Mid Season Dilema

One of my basic beliefs has been challenged. I have firmly believed that good design really matters to business. This spring Maine Outdoors went from using brochures that I designed and had an almost homemade look to a four color version done by someone that I consider a very good designer. The images were critical so I also used a professional photographer.

The resulting brochure is far more attractive than anything Maine Outdoors has ever put out in my opinion. See it here. Initial reviews from my brochure distribution service and many of the innkeepers I work with were very positive. The results are amazing because there simply are none! I am mid way through the summer season and granted Maine Tourism is off considerably due to our weather and a slow economy but I expected at least a few phone calls.

So the question becomes do I attempt to renew my old design that at least made the phone ring occasionally? Reprinting would add significant overhead in a season with slower sales than other years. Do I simply wait out the season and hope for the best? Most of my clients come either through the web page or referrals from other clients so maybe simple patience is the best course of action.

The best leads come from satisfied customers and they don't need a new brochure. They have their memories. Spend your limited resources cultivating that garden.

By the way, do I get a hat for a pithy comment??

Mac and Gail,You are right in fact my existing client list and their refferals are carring this season for me. I think it is important to get new names on that list. Some folks do not visit Maine every summer. Can't imagine why.Sorry no hat.
