Traditional Opening Day of Fishing Season

April 1 was the opening day of open water fishing season in this part of Maine. That changed a short while ago and we can now fish through the ice until it melts and then in the open water right away. This change was of course unrecognized by nature. The ice is still in on most lakes and ponds and with rain last night the streams and rivers are high, cold and the water dirty. So as usual not much of an opening day except that we all know that it won’t be long now.

The sun is out this afternoon and most of the snow is gone from the fields so it will not be long until I launch the Lund Alaskan and spend an afternoon casting flies. To add to the spring feeling new flies will arrive this week. Secret patterns designed to get the big bass in feeding mood and putting a bend in my clients rods. Can’t wait to see how they work!

Don,

I drove up to 7 Tree this afternoon and the ice is out of the northern half of the lake. The water is very high.

Al,

Seven Tree is always one of the first ponds to lose the ice (along with Round Pond) because of the river passing through. The river is also the reason for the high water. Hopefully we will have some warmer weather soon without a lot of rain and water levels will drop some.

Best,

Don
