This is the 30th anniversary of Maine Outdoors but more than that I have been running this small business for half of my life! Yes math wizards I am 60; I know it is hard to believe!
The season is already looking busy and many parties already have their dates reserved. With the winter already showing signs of receding into an early spring after never really getting started we should all start to get ready because it will be here soon.
Yes it is true and not just one or two but a whole flock of maybe twenty birds. I had a neighbor ask me a couple of weeks ago if it was possible that they had seen a flock of bluebirds and I told them that I sometimes see a few mid-winter; usually males looking to occupy the best nesting habitats in the early spring. The flock I saw today had both males and females. Still I guess that the strategy is the same; to be here first and take the very best nesting places. I heard at least one male singing in mid-December so I am guessing that this mild winter (except for last weekend) allowed them to stay right through.

I was working with a website consultant this week and she pointedly asked me. I don't see a list of things to bring along on my trip. Why is that missing? The answer is simply that as I have told many of you over the years. All you really need is a jacket and a smile!
The basic equipment is always there for you to use be it a fishing rod or canoe paddle. In good repair and well matched to whatever we are doing. Fishing licenses are written out on the boat so that you do not need to spend the time or effort to make that arrangement.
It goes further though I try to have the things that you might want and have forgotten readily available. For years a camera was one of those items. First I supplied disposable film cameras and then made my digital camera available and shared the pictures. Interesting that need has all but disappeared now that everyone has a mobile phone with a camera.
Small things like sunscreen, spare sunglasses and even cleaners to get those fingerprints off of your glasses. All of them become obvious over the years and always make me smile when I can pull an item out of a corner somewhere just when it is needed most.
So to answer her question really all you need is a jacket and a smile. Everything else is right here!
I have two things that I am wondering about and perhaps you can help. First as I mentioned earlier Maine Outdoors is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. I am trying to come up with a good way to celebrate. Perhaps an event? Cookout? Kids fishing event? Fundraiser for a local charity; perhaps the local land trust or the Maine Guides Education Fund (the guide's association charitable arm)? I have a few ideas and am seeking more, have any?
