Plastic Bait Problems

Created on Tue May 19, 2009 by Don Kleiner

Those of you that fish are no doubt using some soft plastic baits. They are effective for bass and I have used plastic tails when fishing for perch, bass and stripers over the years. Recent research done by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (press release here) indicates that there is a problem with these baits when they are lost or discarded. An article in the Portland Press Herald describes the issue.

Funny I was a very long time giving up my old pork rind and switching to plastic. Seems like the responsible thing to do is to switch back!

Sorry I do not use much bait when striper fishing. I would guess the best times at either location to be the last three hours of an incoming tide and the first three hours of the going tide. You may have luck closer to low tide but I would start there. As always striper fishing is best in low light. They shoud be here soon. I have reliable reports of fish around Portland. Let me know if you find any in our river this week.
