Customer Relationships

Over the years I have developed some great relationships with my clients. We both enjoy each other’s company and look forward to spending time together each summer or fall. Sometimes I have gone the extra mile for them to make a trip truly memorable or special, a birthday cake, a visit to an out of the way place that I know they will appreciate or something as simple as driving to their hotel with a forgotten jacket or pair of sunglasses.

I had a nice chat yesterday with Carl Natale business blogger at MaineBusiness.com. He was interested in my small business seminar for guides and wanted a little more information on what was included. As we were talking I mentioned that I have come to enjoy my relationships with other guides in the area, that we frequently work together on large groups and refer each other when the occasion presents itself. I truly enjoy having others in the same business that I can call on and that call on me for ideas or help if needed. Our relationship is based on trust and quick response to each other.

That got me thinking about the other businesses that have relationships with Maine Outdoors. Am I holding them to the same standard? I have written before about the lack of concern or even interest from some of the businesses that I support. The point was driven home for me by an e-mail request to my bank that was unanswered for over a week. I guess I should have sent a letter? In these difficult economic times the folks that I pay need to be looking out for my interest as well as theirs and if that is not the case is it time to search out a new relationship?

When my outboard motor is not working mid season the repair shop understands that being able to pay their bill depends on getting back up and running quickly and will drop everything to make it happen. They have done just that over the years. Lunches for someone with a special diet? Not a problem for the Café in town just let us know and we will give you what you need.

I have already moved the website to a local hosting company, actually more expensive but with an interest in my business and success. It seems as though my other business arrangements need careful review as well. Most of these companies are large and really do not care if Maine Outdoors exists or not, in that category are my bank, credit card processor, cell phone and local telephone companies.

What are the elements of a good business relationship? Is it just paying bills in a timely matter? Lowest price? Convenience? I have chosen my bank in the past based on them being close but is not driving a reason for doing business with someone? Especially since most of my transactions are electronic these days.

I plan to review the relationships Maine Outdoors has in the next month or so and see if there are better relationships that I might establish.
