Trips this weekend had me on a variety of locations on the Saint George River, this afternoon when I stopped to review last couple of days I realized that I had been over quite a bit of the watershed.

This time of year I talk and exchange e-mail with lots of anglers and everyone is interested in the same topic. Are the bass spawning? Why, during the spawning period the male fish aggressively defend the nest that they have scooped out of the gravel along the shore or next to some object that provides cover. This behavior can make for some fast and exciting fishing. From my perspective it is the best “sight fishing” of the year. Meaning that we can see the fish we are attempting to catch.

Each summer I wait for the time when the bass are “looking up” to feed eagerly. Granted most of the summer some bass will take a popper if conditions are right but around the middle of July they are all feeding on the surface, sometimes with abandon.
