Are the bass spawning?

This time of year I talk and exchange e-mail with lots of anglers and everyone is interested in the same topic. Are the bass spawning? Why, during the spawning period the male fish aggressively defend the nest that they have scooped out of the gravel along the shore or next to some object that provides cover. This behavior can make for some fast and exciting fishing. From my perspective it is the best “sight fishing” of the year. Meaning that we can see the fish we are attempting to catch.

So the report, not yet here in the mid coast. Water temperatures had made it to the high 50’s before the rain and gloom of the last week or so but are now back down to around 54. I consider bass spawning to take place with water temperatures of around 60 (not exactly true and smallmouth bass cooler than largemouth bass). So the answer this week is not quite yet but very soon.

The forecast is for sun over the next couple of days which should kick start the water temperatures again, Memorial Day weekend looks to be prime time! I am looking forward to some exciting bass fishing over the next couple of weeks.
