Smallmouth bass on the surface!

After three days guiding on the saltwater and feeling my way around in the thick fog I was ready for a couple of quiet hours fishing on freshwater. The surface of the pond was  smooth when I launched the boat and the promised rain showers not too far to the west. I could see fish here and there splashing on the surface but without any real pattern to the feeding.

A small flyrod popper was the fly of choice after a half an hour of trying to figure it out. So the big news is those couple of weeks when the bass are looking up and feeding heavily on dragonflies and damselflies are here. In the next couple of hours I landed a dozen fish the biggest one might have gone three pounds but even the little ones were sporty on the flyrod. Interesting that the popper continued to work even after the rain started in earnest.

If you have been waiting for some of the most fun fly-fishing there is now is the time. My usual guess is that it lasts about three weeks.

Sorry to hear about your puppy I know from past experiences, losing your dog is like loosing your best friend.

Just checking in on them thair perch flies?? I have caught a few pickerel on them and a couple lg mouth so I know there hot. I am looking for some bigger feathers.... But at the moment I am tying up some girglers for a friend. I saw this frog like pattern tied with the hook up, that is my next attempt. I'll send you a couple if they are not too much of a pain to tie!
Glad to hear all is well. We will be in Maine starting September 8 th to the 20th.....BTW do you have any of them thair flies left? Hope you are not going thru them like beans thru a duck!~
All the best,
AJ
