I spent the last two days at the event in Newport RI. A couple of bonuses first I was able to have dinner with Nicholas as the University of Rhode Island on my way to the event and second it was only a rain storm to drive home in.
The first day of the rendezvous was attended by saltwater fly fishing guides from on the east coast covering the coast from Maine (Me) to New Jersey. We were given presentations on how to take better pictures with our digital cameras, the latest Orvis products, an hour from Stripers Forever on why stripers should be a gamefish; and how to do a better job developing web content that will draw visitors to our web sites.
I realized that I am somewhat unique in that I fish in both fresh and saltwater. But we all have a great deal in common; in fact everyone was talking about the dramatic decline in the striper fishery. I hope that trend turns around this summer but after hearing the same thing from up and down the coast I am not holding out a lot of hope for our coming striper season.
I enjoyed meeting others in the same business and on the second day when the Endorsed guides and lodges arrived seeing a number of old friends. By the way you know you are old when you talk with someone who you guided with in 1984! All in all a very informative couple of days.
Thank you to everyone at Orvis for making the event relevant to my business and expressing your understanding that part of your success will be having me be successful. The effort is very much appreciated and all too rare these days.
