This morning was breezy and cloudy with the threat of rain on the horizon. Very similar to last Monday with water temperatures having fallen a little further. Last week my clients did well on bass pickerel and pike. I had nothing on my calendar and decided to take advantage of the conditions and see if I could do as well as they did. Keep in mind that I have had a truly big pike on my list for some time.
I fished for a couple of hours and was pleased with the fishing. Several decent bass to the boat along with a bunch of little bass and a few pickerel. I am experimenting with using fluorocarbon leaders for toothy fish and am pleased to report good results with the leader and the knot I am using to connect it to the line. All good so far!
I moved down the pond to one of my other regular spots and made several casts with no results. Suddenly a huge jolt at the end of my line and clearly the light outfit that I had in my hand was well beyond its capabilities. I did my best to hold on to the fish and actually got it to the side of the boat where I had a really good look at it. It was (and still is) a good 40 inches. When I got it to the side of the boat and went to grab the net. You know the rest of the story. Needless to say, the rod was not up to the task at hand and stopping that freight train was not in the cards.
It’s been a long time since a fish made me feel like a little kid again (like the picture)! I fished a while longer, the wind was building so I called it a morning. On arriving home, I rigged a few of my striper rods for the rematch! Have I mentioned that I love fall fishing!
