As November rolls in, the signs of winter become unmistakable. The air nips at our cheeks, the leaves no longer blaze with fiery hues, and the water’s surface looks thick and almost oily. The woodstove needs regular tending, certainly every evening, if not during the day. These signs mark the bittersweet winding down of another season. Sure, there are a few more trips on the calendar, but folks’ attention mostly turns to other things.
This year, our 38th, has been one for the memory books. I’ve shared countless adventures with families, seasoned anglers, and curious newcomers, all drawn to the magic of Maine’s waterways. From battling stripers on the saltwater section of the Saint George River to the serene beauty of fly-fishing on Megunticook Lake, we’ve witnessed the wonder and camaraderie that fishing provides.
These last few trips have been particularly special. The fall foliage has been a breathtaking backdrop, and the cooler temperatures have invigorated the fish. We’ve brought some nice fish to the boat, from hefty pike to feisty trout. But it’s the stories that resonate most for all of us.
The young couple who reeled in their first largemouth bass together, their faces beaming with pure joy. The father and son team, sharing a quiet moment on the water, their bond strengthened by a shared passion. These are the moments that make what I do truly rewarding.
As the days shorten and the first hints of winter approach, it will soon be time to pack away the rods and reels for another year. However, this isn’t goodbye. It’s a “see you soon” to the loyal clients and new friends.
While my guiding season ends soon, there’s still much to appreciate in the coming months. We’ll be turning our attention to enjoying the peacefulness of the off-season and, of course, preparing for the adventures that await us all next spring.
I’d like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all of you who have chosen Maine Outdoors. We wouldn’t be here without your trust and enthusiasm.
