The woodcock return

Last evening when I went to let the dogs out for their run I heard the unmistakable peent of a male woodcock. No spiraling courtship display yet but it can only be days off. Most folks do not know what a woodcock is but to those in the know they are an important part of the spring progression. Each day it gets harder to sit at my desk or attend some meeting or other and only think about the outdoors. I am itching to get started.

Of course there are still barriers to a genuine good time. Little things like the ice still covering the ponds or a foot of snow in the woods or today a stiff northwest wind. So I guess I will have to get along on morning walks and talking with clients about trips we will be on together in the coming season.

My lobbying work has taken on a new intensity as the Fish and Wildlife Committee really has hit their stride. Every time they meet they are holding several hearings and taking final votes on several other bills. Many of the ideas put forward we have all heard before and they have little more support this time than they did last time but still you just never know when one will get legs. I am still impressed with the Maine legislature in spite of how silly they look at times. I find individual legislators to be thoughtful and certainly they want to do the right thing. Sometimes we just don’t agree on what the right thing is.
