Web marketing for a guide?

I’ve been tweaking my Adwords and Yahoo search marketing campaigns today. It is always a struggle to figure out what someone who is looking for a business like mine thinks about. In fact I am giving a presentation to the staff from the state visitor’s centers with a similar theme. After 20 years at it I know that there are many visitors to our area who are looking for a guide. Of course they do not know that they are looking for a guide. They are looking for someone to make a quiet evening canoe trip possible, or perhaps help their child catch their first fish or maybe even someone to teach them how to cast a fly line. They want all of that but do not know how to ask because they are beginners and don’t know the jargon or even what an activity is called. So I am trying to get into their heads and figure out what they would think of when they are looking for my services and where they would look so that I can be there ready with a brochure or web page.

It is not an easy task and I have failed more than I have succeeded in the last year or so. I wasted a small pile of money sending traffic to my online store with only a few sales and I get reservations for trips from only one out of a few hundred visitors to my web site. Clearly I am not thinking about the problem correctly. What should I be doing differently?
