Union Historical Society

Snow two mornings this week, not a big deal an inch or two in the night that melts away by noon. A little reminder to us all that winter is not going to give way to spring without a struggle. The Jotul 118 is working like a charm and heats the house completely in the warmer weather. It still does not have the capacity of the old one but seems to get the job done with less wood. One big difference that I have noticed is that it produces far less ash. I only need to carry out ashes once a week about half the amount that the old 118 produced. How did they do that?

Last evening I spoke to the Union Historical Society and had a great time. It is fun to speak locally and have neighbors realize what I do. I was on the schedule to talk about hunting and trapping but I worked into wildlife management and the looming crisis in funding for that management as hunters age and begin to drop out. I got an excellent reception and even good marks from Argy sitting in the audience to be a critic.

As an interesting aside there were three licensed guides in the room and one soon to be guide. (Scheduled for the test soon) Two of them were pretty open about having copied what I have built at Maine Outdoors. I guess I have had an impact in the area even if it was unintended and I am flattered.

The next small business seminar for guides has been scheduled for June 3rd at the Maine Principal’s Association in Augusta. You can see a description of the seminar and register online at Running a Successful Maine Guide Business Seminar It is always interesting to see what the turnout will be.
