Today is a summer day that is for sure, the humidity is hanging in the air holding down the visibility and the temperature is in the low 90’s. Quite a change from last week when I was wondering if I should put in some more firewood to carry us through until summer arrived. If you don’t like the weather in New England just wait a minute.
I fished on one of the local ponds this morning, one that I have not spent much time on in the last few years, in search of a few smallmouth bass. It was very pleasant to realize that I still knew the pond well enough to get on fish almost immediately. In fact one of my old tricks made the difference, fish were holding right against the bank within only a few inches of the rocks. They have not yet started to spawn in a serious way but it is not far off. There were a few bedded fish and several places where beds had been scraped out but were not yet holding fish. Only a few days until some of the most fun smallmouth bass fishing of the year is underway.
The other interesting thing is the almost total lack of black flies. Normally the first really hot day brings them out in droves. But this morning there were only a few to be found, I wonder if that will change or somehow we have managed to escape them for this year.
