Spring arrives in Maine

Spring officially arrives this afternoon. Of course we have a stiff northwest breeze and the noontime temperature is in the 30’s and snow is in the forecast for tomorrow but spring is here. To celebrate I am hauling the boat down to Waldoboro for the spring tune up and overhaul. Should be ready to go sometime early next month.

The days are noticeable longer now with first light in the east when I get up at 4:45 and the sun rises in the east instead of the southeast. Moving a little further north each day we are lucky to live in a place where the sunrise is plainly visible and it is easy to mark the suns northward progress.

We drove to Rockland over the weekend and I was surprised to see both Grassy Pond and Chicakwaukie with mostly open water. Round Pond here in town is partly open and the ice is moving back and forth as the wind changes direction. Of course even with open water the water temperature is still pretty cold and it will be a while before the fish start to move again. But all of these are signs that there is progress towards the warmer months and summer.

It won’t be long now until we are all striper fishing and enjoying cookouts in the evening.
