Mild for December

We are enjoying a very mild December with only a little snow early on and now a warm and settled stretch. The wood pile is not going down at it’s normal rate and I am sure that we are not using much if any oil. I noticed today that not only is there not much ice on the local ponds but the loons are still swimming around in them. I watched a large flock of geese pass over the house this morning and then all barrel roll into the field below. I had forgotten what acrobatic flyers gees can be when they want to be. I also noticed a good number of bufflehead ducks and goldeneyes on the ponds today all enjoying the lack of ice. I can remember years when we were ice fishing on a few ponds in December but there is no way this year. Most of the local ponds have open water.

I have added cases made by Igas Island that fit a Maine Atlas and Gazeteer to the Maine Outdoors Online Store. The cases are designed to keep the books clean and in useable condition longer. If you are someone like me and you keep your Gazetteer in your vehicle for handy reference this is a must have item. I can already see that it will keep mine useable longer. Even though I buy new ones regularly to keep it updated the old one is usually beat up and torn long before I replace it. I am sure that many folks will see this as a useful product.
