Late June Striper Report

I’ve made the trip down onto the salt water a couple of times this week and am pleased to report that there are indeed a few stripers around. So far all seem to be larger fish between 28 and 36 inches.

The fishing reminds me of the early 1990’s with only a few wary fish. Things that we used to have to do to be successful are back. Most noticeable of these is needing to be on the water early not the leisurely 8AM starts I can get away with on my freshwater trips.

So far not enough stripers around to have fish chasing bait on the surface rather it is single fish positioned on a ledge or rip where you have one chance to fool them and they will as likely refuse a fly or lure as not. Actually the biggest fish I saw this morning followed the fly to within three feet of the boat and then lazily swam away. Frustrating to say the least!

In other news there are more mackerel in the river than I have seen in a long time. Part of the reason I suppose that the stripers are well fed and fussy. Let’s hope that things keep improving for the summer.
