Last opening day of Maine fishing

Created on Wed Mar 24, 2010 by Don Kleiner

The new fishing rule book just arrived. Rulebooks for each season land here because Maine Outdoors is a license agent and licenses when required are included in the price of our fishing trips. Most noticeable is the cover of the new book, not a photo but rather a reminder in big letters across the cover that this book is good for two years and not to throw it away.

The big news though is that after this April 1 openwater fishing the season does not close. If the water is covered with ice you can ice fish if there is no ice you can fish with flies or lures. To be sure there are limits on certain bodies of water but starting in a week or so the freshwater fishing season in this part of the state is always open.

I wonder if it will make a difference in how early fishing parties start for me? The season has already spread nicely into the late fall. Could early spring be a new opportunity?
