Great Snowshoeing

Argy and I went snowshoeing yesterday afternoon conditions were perfect. The snow was deep but stiff enough that we did not sink very far. It was warm enough to be out without gloves, with a bright blue sky. The first order of business was to put one of the canoes back on the rack. It had blown off in the storm on Friday and was sitting on top of the snow. This would be a new challenge loading a canoe over my head while on snowshoes. All went pretty well until the point where I usually step back under the carrying yoke on the canoe. For those of you that don’t know backing up in snowshoes is nearly impossible, and with the slip on style of binding that I use it is impossible. So after a brief moment of what do I do now? I was able to slide the boat forward into my shoulders. Carrying it to the rack was pretty simple after that. In fact I did not seem to sink in to the snow much more than I did without the boat.

We spent the next hour or so snowshoeing through the woods out back. Not much to see fro critter tracks but we did see a pair of grouse roosted in the pines near the wood pile. My only other interesting sighting was a snow bunting at our bird feeder in the morning. Unusual because it was on the feeder and I think of them as usually on the ground.
