Good Striper Fishing

In spite of the fact that the river is running brown tannin stained water well out into the salt water there are a good number of stripers to be caught. One unusual feature is that there is so much water flowing out of the river that the incoming tide does not really run in but rather the river simply fills up with more brown water instead of a rush of cool green sea water. Different to be sure and it has impacted the color preference of the fish for flies. For the last few days pure white has been the clear winner over every other pattern. In fact today a pure white fly with no weight beat a weighted fly of another pattern almost five to one.

Fish seem to be holding in all of the usual places in spite of the water conditions but are not in huge bunches like they were for a good part of last summer. Clients seem to catch a few fish at each place that I stop but none of the spots lasts for the usual twenty minutes. Consequently I am moving around more than I usually do in June.

I saw the first harbor porpoise of the summer this morning on my way back up river and noticed that this morning was the first all season that I did not see an eagle during the morning trip. Amazing that they have become so common that I expect to see one each time I am out fishing.
