Family Mackerel Fishing

Created on Thu Jul 2, 2009 by Don Kleiner

Yesterday I spent a foggy morning guiding a family mackerel fishing trip with Capt. George Harris of Superfly Charters. Between us we had the grandparents and all of their grandchildren. We left Thomaston Harbor in thick fog but it lifted some before we had gone a couple of miles. We fished out around Caldwell Island with no luck and wound up in Port Clyde Harbor where everyone caught fish.

It was great fun to have all of these kids catching fish with such delight. On the way back to the harbor we stopped at a seal haul out ledge where the occupants were most cooperative. Letting us get pretty close before entering the water and then swimming around watching us with their heads above water. A great way to spend a foggy morning and show kids from around the country the real coast of Maine.

George took these pictures he is not only a good striper guide but a pretty good photographer under difficult conditions.

When does the mackerel fishing start, what are the best dates.

Ed,Thanks for asking; mackerel arrive here about the 4th of July and stay around until well into September. The best fishing is usually in one of the harbors or around the close in islands.Don
