Spent a morning this week with a boatload of young kids visiting the salt marsh. It was a delight to say the least. Adults are occasionally impressed with some of the facts that I quietly mention to them about some aspect of the environment but never with such joy or total immersion. Those kids were excited about things that I have almost come to take for granted. We spent some time looking for crabs and looking closely at a green crab which they all had to hold. Rockweed was big because it has air chambers that would pop. (I should have remembered that, bubble wrap is still a hit with my teenagers) We watched some lobstermen pull a few traps and stopped to pull in a huge piece of kelp that was floating in the river. The best part for me was near the end of the trip when I got out to show them the old railroad bed along the river and we discovered tracks in the mud. Raccoon, deer and coyote had all walked through that muddy place. The tracks generated tons of excitement, my only regret is that I had not taken along any Plaster of Paris to make casts. I’m in the office today doing all of the regular business stuff that no one ever thinks a guide does. In fact I have gotten so much in the groove for early morning starts that I was at my desk this morning at 4AM. I’ve been reconciling the checkbook, paying bills updating the web page, stuff that goes unnoticed except when it is not done. I have been noticing a distinct drop in traffic to my web site this week. Folks must already be on their vacations or have them planned and not be looking for things to do this summer. This is one of the biggest weekends in the mid coast with the Lobster Festival going on in Rockland next weekend is the Antiques festival in Union and soon after that Union Fair. Summer is starting to wind down.
