Today was one of those days that you dream about for the rest of the year. The weather was pretty close to perfect. Not frosty this morning but chilly enough that you know fall will be here soon with nice warm temperatures during the day. No wind to speak of and a perfect blue sky uninterrupted by even one cloud. I am sitting n the deck this evening and you can hear the neighbors cows clearly mooing steadily a half mile away. The leaves continue their steady change but still are very much green.
I had forgotten what a great experience the fall run of fish can be. This morning in the drizzle with the leaves definitely starting to turn in the background and we had a steady stream of fish in the expected places. The best part about these fish is not only are they actively feeding but they are bigger and certainly stronger than they were a few months ago. I am guessing that the rain of yesterday has started the young alewives seriously heading out to sea and the stripers are lined up to take full advantage of that migration.
When I pulled out of the driveway earlier this week I was surprised to see one of the red maples across the street has started to change color. Then I had to go to Augusta this week and drove past the marsh near Traveller Pond in Coopers Mills where all of the maples are already completely red. Autumn is here for sure and fall is not far off.
