Winters Back is Broken

Yes I know that it will be cold again and it will snow some more for sure; still this evening as I walked on the dirt roads you could feel the ground softening and the air lacked winters sharpness. Daylight now lasts until supper time and the overnight lows are certainly not bone chilling.

I think back to a couple of years ago when winter gave out in mid-February and I am willing to bet that we are seeing the same this year although we never really had a winter this year. Not much snow and only a few really cold days. In fact looking at the forecast I am wondering if there will be enough ice to safely hold our kids ice fishing event next weekend at Ayer Park.

It must be time to turn my thoughts towards spring. The Lund Alaskan will be ready to go with a few hours’ work and a canoe in even less time, another warm day or two and I will be tempted to get out on the water. Although I am very busy in Augusta working for the Maine Professional Guides Association this week, even that looks like it will begin to transition to spring mode soon. Can the first northbound woodcock be far behind?

I am looking forward to being back on the water with clients again!

I don't live in Maine. I live in the upper Midwest a bit South of Lake Superior. I was pondering whether "Winter's back was broken." It is snowing and I am tired of splitting wood. So I searched the internet as to whether Winter's back was broken and found your entry. It brought good cheer and increased hope. My thoughts turn to getting my own boat out this year to explore the many lakes and streams that abound in this part of the country, to smell the fresh air and feel the bright Spring sun. Yes, even swatting those thousands of mosquitoes and black flies even has a bit of an attraction.

The ice is still strong here on the lakes. Trucks and ice fishing shacks still have several safe months. The big dogsled race starts tonight. However, in my head, at least, Spring has begun and I smile.
