Lost?

I had the day off and the weather was perfect. A fishing trip was in order; after all I do not always get to have a rod in my hands on such a perfect morning. I fished Quantabacook Lake in Searsmont; I fish there every few years and rarely with clients because it is so far away to make into a half day trip. I was surprised by the number of alewives splashing in the shallows, clearly they are having a record year in the Saint George watershed.

After a very pleasant few hours I headed back to the boat launch when I noticed a large white bird. At first I dismissed it as a buoy of some sort, then I convinced myself it was a gull but on closer inspection it was an eider drake in full plumage. Most folks would simply shrug and say what a pretty white duck but the truth is that eiders are a sea duck and supposed to be spending their lives in the salt water. In fact rarely up in the lower Saint George as far as Thomaston Harbor.

Still there he was in all of his glory easily 20 miles from the saltwater I can only assume that he is lost.
