I am adding to my resume that I am now the most experienced moose calling contest judge in the state, after all I have judged three of the last four calling contests. They have all been fun and it is always interesting to hear folks different version of the basic bull and cow moose calls. Yesterday’s event had by far the best showmanship and was the most interesting for the audience. Article in the Maine Sunday Telegram.
Anyone who has worked in the woods around moose has a repertoire of calls to use when trying to get a better look at one. Calling works best in the fall around the rut or mating season. I do have stories about calling but will put it simply; be careful when calling, a moose is a big critter who’s judgment can be clouded during that time of the year.
Over the last month or so the Maine Professional Guides Association has been holding meetings of guides around the state. The meetings were arranged by the individual who also led the charge on the moose calling event for the Rangeley Region Guides & Sportsmen's Association, so I was available and a neutral third party and was asked to judge at three of the four events held this spring.
The final will be in Rangeley in June (details here) and don’t you know it there is a regional guides meeting right before the event so there is a chance that I will add one more contest to my resume.
