No doubt about it, summer is here at last. The lupines are in full bloom, turning our roadsides into a riot of purple and pink. Stripers are in the Saint George, and so are the sturgeon. Last week on the Kennebec out of Gardiner, the number of sturgeon jumping was truly amazing. We didn’t see any giants, but many 4 to 5-foot fish were jumping all around. What a treat!
I’m guiding most days and have enjoyed getting some great reviews from clients. These are always rewarding and a reminder that I provide great memories for folks.
This summer isn’t as busy as the last several, and I have to admit I like it. Two benefits of the slower pace are: first, I can fit in last-minute reservations. For the last four or five years, my calendar was full weeks in advance, and fitting someone in quickly was not an option. Second, I can get projects around the house done. Stacking next winter’s firewood is always on my list, along with mowing the lawn once a week. There are other small tasks that need attention, each taking some time.
The big project that needs my attention is the installation of solar panels on the garage and a battery backup in the basement. In theory, this will help us avoid the power outages that have become all too frequent in rural Maine. Like any big project, there are multiple parts: first, new shingles on the garage roof under the panels, then burying the cable from the garage to the house, and finally, installing all the parts. All great stuff, but it takes time to ensure things are moving along.
