What have you done lately to support wildlife conservation?

In Maine state government fish and wildlife conservation is supported exclusively by hunting and fishing license fees. A recent effort to secure part of the sales tax to fund natural resources failed and there is no other tax money applied to this important work. So unless you purchase a hunting or fishing license you have not done anything!

My clients are big supporters of fish and wildlife conservation in Maine because licenses for any fishing trips we offer are included in the price of the trip. I fill out the license at the beginning of each trip and submit payments to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife on our clients’ behalf each month. It is seamless for our clients and significant for our fish and wildlife resources.

How much you might ask? Well in June of 2011 it was $305! Not huge but a significant impact from just one small Maine business. Where else can you have a great time outdoors and deliver significant support to the resources that we all value?
