What a change in the weather

Last week cold snow wind and rain this week 80 degrees sunshine and the daffodils are in bloom on the lawn. In fact for the last few days we have had flood warnings and high fire danger. The floods a result of the rapidly melting snow pack to the north and the fire danger due to the drying breezes and warm temperatures. You have to love New England weather.

I am gradually getting my equipment into working condition for the coming season. Yesterday I loaded and unloaded the new Tripper XL from the Yukon and canoe trailer several times to figure out the best method for handling it. I will have to make some changes to the canoe trailer to accommodate the width of the boat. It is not wider than the others but rather carries the width for a longer section in the middle. That width is where the canoe gets the carrying capacity and stability that I am looking for in a boat to carry a family’s worth of kids and myself for an afternoon nature exploration trip. I am really looking forward to using it this summer. Well to be honest at this point I am simply looking forward to spending some time actually guiding.

Yesterday I attended the hearing on a proposal to require a salt water fishing license in Maine. I was stunned to hear little discussion of the progress that could be made in fisheries conservation with the money generated and data collected. Rather the proposal is driven by a bureaucratic need for better data on who is fishing. Seems to me that the proponents missed an excellent chance to pull everyone together to make a difference for our resources, with any luck they will go back to the drawing board and figure out a way to get everyone behind them.
