This week was again very busy, most of my time was on freshwater with folks young and younger who were new to fishing. Two family fishing trips on consecutive afternoons produced impressive numbers of perch, sunfish and shiners that were a delight to the kids involved. On one of the trips we also brought several nice bass and a few pickerel to the boat for pictures. Both afternoons were cloudy which I think makes spending time in the middle of the pond especially pleasant. After several weeks of standing out in the sun cloudy skies are a pleasant relief. The other thing about a cloudy day is that it is much easier to see into the water. On the second afternoon the kids were able to see the fish as they swarmed around their bait and were delighted to see the fish actually bite the worm and get hooked.
I also had two learn to fly fish trips, one on freshwater and one on saltwater, with a couple from the desert who very much enjoyed wearing rain gear on their morning of striper fishing. They had both caught and landed nice bass on their afternoon freshwater trip but were not fortunate enough to land stripers even though they each had fish on the line. Friday morning my striper trip produced a nice big fish for a young client although a driving rain eventually made us call it a morning. The good news is that the big stripers have finally arrived so from now until fall there is always a chance of a trip producing an impressive striper.
As always I am fortunate to spend time outdoors with folks who find the local area remarkable and appreciate appreciate our natural resources. If only because it is so different than the world where they live every day.
