Unusual bird sightings

The summer of unusual bird sightings continues for me. On Saturday I stopped to fish a ledge and a turkey flew out of the trees on the bank (I guess frightened by our arrival in the boat) I am sure that she thought it would be a short flight followed by a quick touch down. Much to the turkeys surprise she had flown out over the river where it was about a mile wide. On the initial glide down it nearly went into the water but realized that landing was not a good idea (do you suppose that they can swim?) a great flapping of wings got some altitude for another glide down.  She continued that way all across the river gliding down after maybe a hundred yards or so; a frantic flapping of wings and more altitude. I watched carefully and she did make the far shore but I can’t imagine that the return trip was on the mornings agenda.

This morning I saw another eagle chasing an osprey trying to steal the ospreys’ fish. The air show was not as long as last week, the eagle gave up after a few passes and flew off without a fish to show for its efforts.

I am experiencing a good variety of trips for early June. This week alone I will have been on a sunset canoe trip, several striper fishing trips, a couple of family fishing trips and a wildlife watching canoe trip. With all of this variety it is very hard to tire of being out every day. The weather continues to be very pleasant and notably dry except for a few thundershowers yesterday afternoon and from the look of this morning’s paper they were much more severe elsewhere in the state.
