Turkeys in the Snow

We live in an area made up of dairy farms, blueberry fields and woodlots along with lots of bodies of water. Because of the farms the early stockings of wild turkeys took place here thirty years ago. Turkeys had been extirpated from Maine long before and the reintroduction was an experiment at the time.Wild Turkeys in the Road

Turkeys have done very well here with large flocks visible most any day in the winter. But this winter with all of the deep soft snow (over three feet on the level) made me wonder. Actually the office windows are all at least partially blocked by snow either piled from the driveway or pulled off of the roof. As you can see in the pictures there is not any cause for alarm.

Yesterday the driveway was plowed a little before noon and we left on a snowshoeing trip a little after one and there were turkey tracks all over the driveway when we walked out of the door. So I guess that they are making out alright and on the lookout for any opportunity to scratch on bare ground. With days getting longer, the sun stronger and temperatures a little warmer things a looking up for them I am sure.
