My guiding season is complete the old Lund Alaskan has been sold and delivered. A new Alaskan is on order for delivery before next season and it is time to get to work in the office. I am delighted with a slower pace and a little rest is in order but sitting at my desk for stretches and simply writing or dealing with the year-end details don’t seem like much fun. The good news is that I do not have any duck hunters scheduled for the first time in many years. Given the wind we have had and are forecast to have I am delighted not to have to explain why we can’t go. My work as a lobbyist for the Maine Bowhunters Association and the Maine Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation has picked up a little as well with a couple of meetings this week. So I am not simply chained to my desk day in and day out.
In fact next week will have me at the hearings on the Plum Creek rezoning request from the Land Use Regulation Commission. I am scheduled to be cross-examined by attorneys from a couple of groups about my opinions on tourism and the effects of a resort type development. It should be interesting to hear the proceedings and see the exact sort of questions I am asked.
I traveled to visit family in New Jersey for Thanksgiving and took a fly rod along with plans to spend a morning striper fishing. The plan simply did not come together between family obligations and cold weather. Maybe next year. Our trip home Sunday afternoon and evening made it very clear why we live in Maine. Traffic was at a bumper-to-bumper crawl from just before the Tappan Zee Bridge in New York to Worcester Massachusetts. It was a relief to drive to the post office here in Union the next morning!
