Snowshoeing and looking for Maine wildlife

The afternoon was much warmer than the recent days although cloudy there was no wind and a couple of feet of soft snow. Thought that I would get out on a brief winter exploration trip of my own, and see what the local wildlife had been up to. One of the great things about the snow is that the story of what has gone on outdoors since the last snowstorm is clear and easy to read.Looking back on my snowshoe trail

I put on my snowshoes and headed out into my woodlot to see who had been there of note. I crossed several sets of mouse tracks coming up out of the snow and travelling on the surface for a few feet before heading back down. Grey squirrel tracks were very prominent as were deer tracks and beds used before yesterday’s snowfall.

I broke trail for about a half an hour and headed home on my track, which is much easier walking. The snow is very dry and conditions were perfect for a quick look for the local wildlife. As the days get longer and the weather moderates I am looking forward to guiding a few of these wildlife adventures.
