New Snow Today

Our latest snowstorm left behind six or eight inches of new snow. We had rain for a brief period during the middle of the day and because everything was wet, the snow at the end of the storm stuck to everything! You cannot see through the woods even though all of the leaves are down. White branches obscure the view. Our Canoes on rack in snowlong period without a thaw has the snow piled around the driveway quite high. The mound in front of the house is now higher than my head and the dogs have not been able to see out of the kennel for quite some time now.

As we get to the end of February days are noticeably longer and we now eat breakfast and supper in daylight where only a couple of months ago both were in the complete dark. We are past the hardest part of the winter and from here to the end it will be pleasant. Not real cold (relative to January), longer days and the promise of spring with every passing hour. At these temperatures the woodstove easily heats the house and does not need to be filled every hour or two. Even heating with wood gets leisurely. This week I noticed several red tailed hawks which tells me that their spring migration has started. It won’t be long at all now.
