Gulls in the Field

I am wondering about the flock of gulls (maybe 50) that have taken up residence in the hay field across the street. They spend the day walking around feeding on what I guess to be bugs and earthworms. It appears that they roost in another field down the road at night on the ground. I have looked them over pretty carefully and it appears that they are all Herring Gulls mostly mature judging by their plumage but there are immature gulls as well.

This has to be the best season to be a gull on the Maine coast. Why are they here and not down feeding on herring? In a perhaps related observation there are many more laughing gulls than I remember on the cost these days. I remember about 15 years ago seeing my first one in this area. Have the Laughing Gulls driven the Herring Gulls inland? Or do the Herring Gulls prefer to walk around in hay fields? If you have any ideas please let me know.
