I think that September is without a doubt the best time of the year. The weather is settled and warm during the day with cool nights. This morning I took advantage of a day off and went fishing. No big expedition just an hour on Seven Tree Pond to try and catch a few perch on a fly. I have been trying all summer to find the fly that really works on perch without much luck. Because it was still and sunny I could watch the fish even if they did not take the fly making ideal conditions to see what they were interested in. I tried almost everything in my box with little luck, I did in fact catch a bunch of fish but did not find the magic fly. I did catch one really nice smallmouth bass on a fly. I had seen the fish cruising under the surface and cast to him. The take was instant unlike the perch that I needed to encourage by stripping and stopping frequently.
I tried the electric motor on the Grand Laker and it worked like a charm. Can’t wait to see how it works with clients tomorrow. A little more weight in the boat may make a difference. I found it to be really pleasant to move along the water with no sound though.
