As some of you know Brynna has helped out in the office and doing various chores here at Maine Outdoors for the last three summers. I asked her for her perspective on this summer and here are her thoughts.
These past couple weeks have been hot and humid, the type of weather that makes it hard to want to do anything besides drink a glass of ice tea and take a nap – or get out on the water.
I’ve been making a point of spending a lot of time at my favorite swimming spots – a couple of local ponds. There, everything is cooler and humming with life. Tree branches hang out over the water, and grasses and lily pads form an underwater forest near the shore. Bright blue dragonflies swoop low above the water and water striders dart along the surface.
There’s a pair of loons that lives on one of the ponds – I make a game of seeing if I can find both of them every time I’m there – and usually I can. I’ll also frequently see a turtle swimming along, its nose just poking up out of the water, or catch a glimpse of a few fish swimming close to the shore.
On the days I’ve brought my kayak and traveled further along the shore or upstream I’ve seen osprey catching fish, beavers hard at work, and an abundance of songbirds in the nearby trees.
I’m always amazed at how much is going on in and around the water, even on these lazy, hot days. It’s exciting to be part of it.
