Last fall I was approached about chairing the Maine SkillsUSA Championships in Outdoor recreation this year. The SkillsUSA Championships is a showcase of America’s skilled career and technical education students. It’s also one of the largest hands-on workforce development events in the world. The state competition is scheduled to be held in Bangor in the middle of March and will take a morning.
The location in Bangor and the space are set. I need to find a couple more judges and with them review the standards that we will measure. After that comes finalizing the materials for the judges to use and obtaining any equipment that we think is needed. It is after all very cold (not at all like the image in the post) here this week so time at my desk arranging details is not the worst idea. Not to mention having a small chance to see in action; the future of the industry that has provided me an excellent career for nearly forty years.
As with any event there will be a small need for funding, and I plan to reach out to a few organizations. The need should not be huge so hopefully fundraising is not a challenge. Because this is all new to me it takes time to think things through and figure out what the next steps are. All I can say is I am working on it and looking forward to seeing the students in action.
More to come I am certain.
