Loons up close

The best of spring fishing is underway with sight fishing for nesting bass; great fun with a fly rod. As I move along the shoreline searching for those beds I meet the loons who are right now searching out their nesting sites. I see at least a few every trip out some near familiar nest sites others in places I am surprised to see them.

Last week I noticed a pair far up in the grass at the edge of a shallow pond. Don’t know that I have ever seen loons way back up in like that before. They are usually in the deeper open water. Yesterday I passed not far from a regular nest site I did not fish that particular cove skipping over it for another trip. I noticed the loons along the shore and soon they swam right out to the boat. Following along for a couple hundred yards quite close as you can see in the picture; I don’t think that they were threatening but interested.

Later on in the summer I am certain that I will want to show someone a loon and there will not be one to be found. You just never know what you will see. These characters beat a hasty retreat as soon as I had the camera out and paid attention to them.
