Early summer update

Summer sort of. Well not really; last week we had temperatures in the 90s and by Sunday the high for the day was in the low 40s with cold rain. Even this afternoon we had a small fire in the woodstove to chase the dampness. Not good for the young birds, especially ground nesting species like ruffed grouse and woodcock. I have also noticed that about half of the eagle nests do not seem to have been successful. I notice that the adults are both away from the nest and not hanging around to keep any potential troublemakers away from young eaglets. I have also noticed that many pairs of loons do not seem to be nesting. The pairs are fishing together way out in the lake and when I pass close to usual nest locations I am not getting the usual defense. There is still time for me to be wrong on this one loon chicks do not normally hatch until the end of the month. With luck clients will be watching the little loons soon enough,

On the fishing front more unusual stuff. I am finding that fish are taking a lure or fly when it has stopped moving and sitting. I see this pattern in the late fall but it has been consistent this spring. Not just freshwater bass but trout, perch and even stripers have been the same. Go figure.

I expect that we will return to the normal summer soon including some warmer weather.
