Adapting to the new normal

I trust that you are all safe at home and do not need to go out. We are doing the same here in Maine. Argy and I completed our once every two week grocery adventure, that used to be a weekly chore.

I have been spending time thinking about changes that Maine Outdoors will need to make once we get past all of this and slowly get back to what we all love doing. For the moment we are not an essential business and are basically closed. Here are the current plans to make trips safer for clients.

If you or I are sick we can’t go. No matter how badly you want to go or I want to take you. End of discussion. I am wondering why this took me so long to say out loud.

How many can I accommodate? On canoe trips that number really does not change but I have always prided myself on being able to take the entire family (within reason) in every trip. If we are supposed to be 6 feet apart in a 20 foot boat that sounds like 2 with a guide. I do not love this concept and am giving it careful consideration before setting it in stone and hoping we can get to the point where that recommendation is needed.

Equipment will be wiped down with disinfectant at the end of each trip. Everything from boat seats, fishing rods and certainly life vests if worn on a canoe trip. A daily end of day washdown will become part of the routine. Twice a day.

The metal water bottles that I started giving away to encourage you all to stop using so many plastic bottles will be replaced by. You guessed it; plastic water bottles at least for the short term eliminating the chance anyone could get the virus from this end.

Also newly prominent on all trips will be a big bottle of hand sanitizer. Mounted somewhere on the console in the boat and not just in a small bottle on the dash or in a cooler.

We are still some time from any of you spending time with me in the Maine Outdoors but I wanted you to know that I was thinking about that day, planning and looking forward to it.  Please take care and stay well!
