May is finally here, isn't it? This spring has certainly been a chilly and damp one. And wouldn't you know it, today's forecast calls for more rain with temperatures hovering in the 50s.
As my guiding season kicks off, I've been lucky enough to spend some quality time on the water with a few clients. We've been focusing mostly on "learn to fly fish" trips, with some enjoyable fishing excursions sprinkled in. The weather has definitely kept us on our toes, ranging from cold, rainy, and windy days to the occasional warm and sunny one (though we've seen more of the former!). But hey, keep those spirits up – next week's forecast is looking much brighter and warmer!
There are a couple of natural events on the horizon in the next week or so that will definitely mark the calendar. First up, the inevitable arrival of black flies! For the next few weeks, you'll find me where there's at least a little breeze to keep those bugs at bay. Second, we're anticipating the run of alewives in our local rivers. The birds have already given us a pretty clear sign that they're not far off, and I'd bet the stripers will be hot on their tails.
Speaking of bass, the fishing has been improving steadily each day. The spring spawn, when the male bass aggressively guard their nests in the warmer lakes, should be happening any day now. One of the delightful surprises this spring has been the number of trout eagerly taking flies and lures that were actually intended for bass. I've noticed more trout making their way into the net during these early spring trips over the past few years. I can't quite put my finger on whether it's something I'm doing differently or if the fish have changed their habits, but either way, it's been a welcome bonus to our late April and early May outings!
There are still open dates in my calendar. You can make a reservation for a trip at this link.
As always come write or call if i can help you create some outdoor memories.
Best regards,
