The last couple of weeks have been filled with a variety of trips and I have been on the water quite a bit. Here is an update on the current conditions as I see them. Water levels in the Saint George are at about normal for summer. I can report that there are plenty of mosquitoes when you are out of the breeze which has been keeping our visits to the beaver's lodge short on nature exploration canoe trips.
All of the rain earlier this summer and forecast for this week has put lots of tannin (from the leaves on the ground) in the water staining it much darker than normal and of course making foam where the waves lap on the shore. The additional water has not hurt the fishing though on any of my freshwater trips. Large and smallmouth bass are showing up in good numbers and the usual places.
The impact of the rain was more pronounced on the saltwater fishing with the lower river water much more brown than normal. For a while even the mackerel became tough to find but we are back to normal now. The stripers started out strong but were pushed out by the freshwater and have not shown back up in numbers. I expect that to improve as the amount of freshwater drops off. Looking forward to the next two months and spending lots if time outdoors!

My fall is filled with upland hunting for grouse and woodcock using my dogs to find and retrieve the birds. The dogs are a key part of the experience and my team not to mention my everyday life. Sadly dogs do not live as long as we do and one of mine died this weekend. Mae the flying pointer succumbed to age and the heat Friday evening.

Checking availability and making reservations
This year there are some changes on www.maineoutdoors.biz that make it easy to check availability for the trip of your choice and make a reservation. If you are thinking about a date you can check the availability calendar.
From any of the trip pages you can click on the make a reservation link and Time Trade will show you the slots available for the trip that you are interested in. From there the process for making a reservation is pretty straightforward. As always I will be in touch to confirm the details and make any additional arrangements.
Of course you can still call Maine Outdoors at (207) 785-4496 and make a reservation the old low tech way. No matter how you choose to make the arrangements I am looking forward to seeing each of you this summer.
