The ice is not completely out but it was a warm sunny morning with only a little wind and a crystal clear blue sky. The upper stretches of the Saint George are open to fishing year round and get a good stocking of brown trout in the fall. So I thought I would try my luck. The water level in the river is low for this time of year; after all of the rain last fall it feels very odd to say that it is dry. I was able to wade in places that are normally way too deep and fast at this time of year. The water temperature was cold and I was glad to have my neoprene waders on.
It is raining and foggy here this morning with a strong south wind that is supposed to swing into the north and return us to winter for a week or so. It was 50 over the weekend with lots of sunshine. It will be hard to return to the weather we are supposed to have in March. It is easy to forget that March is a winter month especially after a winter that never seemed to get started.
Wind and some of the coldest temperatures of the winter have been the features so far this month. Lows have been around 0 and afternoon highs are in the teens with a stiff wind making it feel colder. We are scheduled for snow this afternoon and tonight to add to the feel of winter still hanging on. Needless to say my plans for an early spring and start to the guiding season have been put off. At least for a couple of weeks.
