Winter is here in full force this week with some snow on Monday followed by bitter cod. The high on Wednesday was around 8 I had a meeting in the afternoon and the temperature fell from 6 when I went in to 0 when I came out at around 5:30. The current forecast calls for snow again tomorrow with accumulations of around 6 inches or so. The dogs are in the house most of the time when the temperature is so cold. Mae the pointer thinks that she has died and gone to heaven. She spends most of her time stretched out on the floor right next to the wood stove.
The Land for Maine Futures Board will have to decide this week whether to fund a conservation easement involving the Appalachian Mountain Club in the Katahdin Iron Works section of Northern Maine. The obvious thing is that setting aside open land for the future is a great idea and one that has made considerable progress in the last decade. In fact I heard at some event last week that roughly 7 percent of Maine has been set aside in the last decade, not too shabby.
After several weeks of warm and wet it feels like January. When Argy and I went for our walk this morning it was eight degrees and the temperature at eleven is just eighteen. When it is cold like this it gets uncomfortable to sit at my desk for long periods of time because the floor in the office is so cold. Luckily I can take a laptop in and sit by the woodstove to do my writing. I am sure that this cold snap will put a coat of ice on the lakes and ponds although we are a few days from a solid covering. The best part is some discussion of a snow storm over the weekend.
