April first is not only a traditional day of pranks. It is an official one here in Maine, the first day of our open water fishing season. The joke is that there is precious little open water to fish in. Not to mention that the air temperatures are a little on the chilly side, it is cloudy and for a while this morning we had a little light snow. What open water there is open at the moment is running high and cold.
I am sure that the weather will improve with time but for today open water fishing is a bit of an April fool’s joke. Hope that you were able to get out were not fooled.
Yesterday morning I had let the dogs out for their morning exercise and come in to get something from my desk. I look out of the window and could see Mae the pointer standing stock still, tail wagging just a little. Then she moved and set up again looking very intent (running bird). Soon Copper came up to see what was going on and stopped stock still right behind her. Of course I did not have my spring mindset and at first thought “I wonder what those dogs are watching?”
Last year Maine Outdoors took a big step and dedicated 10% of profits to conservation education efforts. So where did the donations I promised in 2008 go. Maine Outdoors supported the following organizations and groups to further their efforts.
