Last evening was spent on a local pond known for its trout fishing. The day had been warm and the breeze seemed to be dying out. My 
plan was to catch a few trout on dry flies as the shadows lengthened. The bugs arrived on schedule but only a few fish were showing so I moved into the shallows to look for a few smallmouth bass before the trout got underway.
The spring migrations of birds are in full swing, warblers abound and the hummingbirds have returned to the feeder. On our walk yesterday there were birds everywhere most notable for me was a Chestnut sided warbler which I see every spring and bobolinks. Bobolinks are a distinctive field nesting bird that were very common in our area.
This year has been different almost hot in March, low water in April and now cool and wet in May. The upside has been some of the 
best trout fishing I have experienced in many years. The Saint George River is still higher than I really like for comfortable wading. It did provide both brook and brown trout on my most recent trip there.
