This time of year I talk and exchange e-mail with lots of anglers and everyone of them is interested in the same topic. Are the bass spawning? Why, during the spawning period the male fish aggressively defend the nest that they have scooped out of the gravel along the shore or next to some object that provides cover. This behavior can make for some fast and exciting fishing. From my perspective it is the best "sight fishing" of the year. Meaning that we can see the fish we are attempting to catch.
So the report, not yet here in the mid coast. Water temperatures had made it to the high 50's before the rain and gloom of the last week or so but are now back down to around 54. I consider bass spawning to take place with water temperatures of around 60 (not exactly true and smallmouth bass cooler than largemouth bass). So the answer this week is not quite yet but very soon.
The forecast is for sun over the next couple of days which should kick start the water temperatures again, Memorial Day weekend looks to be prime time! I am looking forward to some exciting bass fishing over the next couple of weeks.
I have a few openings in the next two weeks, if you would like to get in on some of the most exciting fishing of the summer give me a call and let's set up a date to get out on the water.

Last week was the annual meeting of the Maine Tourism Association. After two years as the Chair of the Board of Directors I was termed out. As a parting gift the Association recognizes the outgoing chair with what else? A chair (rocking) built by WA Mitchell here in Maine. Actually an 1842 High Back Arm Rocker in cherry and ash; nicely engraved with the Association logo and my name on the back.
So I decided to try it out one afternoon and yes it works perfectly. I will be ordering a longer handled net and am removing the seat that I normally sit in. I should be all set to guide well past 75. I have enjoyed my time as chair of this distinguished organization very much. Thank you all!
